American Woman

WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY Semi Chellas
BASED ON THE NOVEL BY Susan Choi
STARRING Hong Chau, Sarah Gadon, Ellen Burstyn,
John Gallagher Jr., Lola Kirke & David Cubitt

When people have a sense of power, they have a powerful choice – especially those younger and more invisible than most. Set in 1974, American Woman tells the story of two very different women thrown together on the run from the law. Jenny (HONG CHAU) is a fugitive, living in hiding after a turn as a bomber in protest of the Vietnam war. Pauline (SARAH GADON) is an heiress-turned-radical after an unimaginably violent break with her past. Adapted from the Pulitzer-shortlisted novel by Susan Choi, inspired by the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst, the film re-imagines one of the most famous "lost years" of the twentieth century, taking us on a journey of power, identity and transformation from Emmy-winning filmmaker Semi Chellas.

"There is a fascinating story at the heart of American Woman."

"Writer/director Semi Chellas, making her feature debut... [is] not afraid to whisper big questions, to make space for small, beautiful moments, or to keep things quietly tense. Because even a slow simmer eventually boils over."
